Waste Carrier Licence details: The Chelmsford Property Clearances website is part of Essex House Clearances. In accordance with UK Environmental Agency legislation we are fully licenced, with an Upper-Tier waste carrier licence (carrier and broker). The Upper-Tier waste carrier licence is a basic legal requirement for all firms and individuals offering any form of waste removal, which includes house clearances. There is also a free ‘lower tier’ licence, but these are only legally acceptable if the organisation clearing your property is a registered charity.
Why does a waste licence matter?
Unfortunately, fly-tippers come in all manner of guises and the Essex countryside is their dumping ground of choice. These unethical individuals (and sometimes firms) offer dirt-cheap clearance services, take your money and then dump your belongings in the countryside.
A Waste carrier licence, issued by the UK Environmental Agency, is intended to add traceability and accountability. Holders are required to dispose of unwanted items at registered recycling stations (where the licence must be shown and the transfer recorded). Holders are prohibited from using local ‘council tips’. Anyone offering to remove waste or do a house clearance for you must hold and be able to show an upper-tier waste licence by law. This licence only costs £150 for 3 years, yet many avoid even this little fee by falsely registering for the (free) lower-tier licence, which are for businesses which transport and dispose of their own waste – NOT yours – or for registered charities.
To put that into perspective, the chances are that someone willing to break the law to save £150 for a licence is unlikely to pay recycling charges to dispose of your house contents legally (typically £190-200 per ton or a full 3.5 ton transit van load). If you’d rather that the contents of your property don’t get dumped in a quiet country lane, (if contacted by the council or police you’ll need to prove it wasn’t you who dumped it there) you should only deal with properly licenced companies. The risk is that if you don’t, your dirt-cheap waste removal costs could turn into a very expensive criminal conviction for fly-tipping!
